Oral and maxillofacial surgery, also known as jaw surgery, is a medical specialty that deals with various disorders, injuries, and abnormalities in the jaw and facial region. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons focus on the treatment of the jaw bones, facial bones, teeth, and related soft tissues.

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons typically perform the following types of procedures:

  2. Tooth extraction: Removal of teeth that are decayed, misaligned, or otherwise need to be extracted.
  3. Orthognathic surgery: Correction and reshaping of jaw bones and facial bones.
  4. Treatment of jaw fractures: Treatment of fractures in the face and jaw bones, often requiring surgical intervention.
  5. Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder treatment: Treatment of disorders of the jaw joint and surrounding tissues.
  6. Oral surgery: Removal of oral lesions, surgical procedures on the lips and tongue.
  7. Soft tissue surgery: Treatment of soft tissue injuries or abnormalities in the face.
